Vice-President Dr Mahamudu Bawumia called for proper integration of the mining sector into the country’s dominant economy in order to promote inclusive and sustainable growth within mining communities.
Dr Bawumia also stressed the need for inclusion and said that “we must ensure the inclusive and sustainable development of mining communities in order to create the necessary jobs and wealth”.
The Vice President said this during the opening of Ghana Mining Week 2021 in Takoradi on July 1, 2021.
Dr Bawumia mentioned that the government is committed to enforcing responsible and sustainable mining laws at all levels.
For his part, the Minister of Lands and Natural Resources, Samuel Jinapor instructed industry stakeholders to work together in an open, frank and transparent manner to achieve the desired development in the mining industry.
Adding that “we cannot achieve our goals if mining companies underreport production, export and income”.
He mentioned that the development of the mining value chain requires mining companies to comply with local sourcing and content rules, and stressed that the government will also ensure that the necessary measures are put in place to boost the growth and development of the mining industry.
The Minister believed that the discussions held during mining week will help promote and build consensus on government policies in the gold mining sector.
The two-day event attracted more than 250 attendees, mainly regulators, large and small-scale miners, mine support service companies and members of the diplomatic corps.
