In an interview with the German magazine of information Der SpiegelRummenigge expressed surprise at the changes proposed by the president of Juventus, Andrea Agnelli, president of the European Club Association (ECA), for a "pan-European league system".
"Why do we have to change anything about the competition?" Rummenigge asked in the interview, which will be released Saturday.
"The Champions League is already the best competition in the world and the hardest to win."
The concept of Agnelli provided for a complete restructuring of all UEFA competitions from 2024, with internal relegation and promotion in a three-tier system.
He also discussed the idea of playing games on weekends rather than mid-week and proposed a new group format that would include four groups of eight teams instead of the current eight groups of four.
Rummenigge, himself former president of ECA, said that he was "not a friend" of weekend games or an extended group stage.
"The most important thing is that there is no match this weekend, because it would create a big fight with the European leagues," he said.
He denied the magazine's claims that he had previously supported the idea of suspending the weekend in an email leaked to Agnelli.
"I did not have a moment's drive to Damascus on this," he said.
He added that he was expecting "intense" discussions at the ECA shareholders meeting to be held next week, and urged UEFA, the governing body European football, to show "sensitivity" in its decisions.
UEFA is in consultations on the proposals, although President Aleksander Ceferin has ruled out the introduction of upcoming matches.
