The Secretary General of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) urged minority MPs (MPs) to be firm and resolute in decision-making during the ongoing scrutiny of Akufo-Addo’s appointed ministers.

In a statement signed by Johnson Asiedu Nketiah after an emergency meeting on Monday, he insisted that NDC parliamentarians on the nominating committee should reject unqualified candidates.

“The meeting discussed, among other things, the ongoing verification of ministerial candidates and urged the NDC parliamentary caucus to be firm and resolute in its role on the nominating committee,” he said.

The advice appears to have been heard as reflected so far in Monday’s vote on the selected candidates.

Minority MPs on the nominations committee unanimously rejected three of the president’s nominations.

The committee is made up of a total of 26 members – 13 each from the NDC and NPP.

Minister of Information designate Kojo Oppong Nkrumah; The minister-designate of fisheries and aquaculture, Mavis Hawa Koomson, and the minister-designate of food agriculture, Mr. Owusu Afriyie Akoto, were dismissed for various reasons.

However, Asiedu Nketia added that the committee should hold appointed ministers accountable for their actions that violated the post they held.

He also advised the NDC to reject the “insincere apologies” of some ministerial candidates who appeared before the committee.

“He urged them to reject the insincere apologies offered by some of the candidates for the audit committee meetings and to hold them accountable for their actions and statements which violate the obligations imposed on public office holders by the Constitution of 1992.”
