It was an array of beautiful colors from Ekumfi Abor in the central region when 17 young women participated in the 2021 version of the community’s puberty rites to bring them into femininity.
Eligible young women of school age and especially graduates of Junior High School (JHS) dressed in traditional Kente clothing marched through the streets of Ekumfi Abor amid drums, music and dance, after taking courses in ritual and femininity. .
They were decorated with jewelry, colorful scarves, headwear woven with three scarves, African beads and traditional sandals for the parade.
The rites (Bragor in fanté language) organized on September 3 are part of the “Homecoming” activities organized by the chiefs and the people of Ekumfi Abor.
“Homecoming” is an initiative of the chiefs to bring home the citizens of Ekumfi Abor, from far and near, to raise funds to support the development of the community, which incidentally produces a piece of the pineapple required by the ‘Ekumfi juice factory.
The ceremonies in which the younger women participated were in keeping with the cultured culture, and the inhabitants of Abor attach great importance to this ceremony because through it, the young women are exposed to good morals to help them in their education and their adulthood.
“Besides the expectation that young women remain virgins before the rite of puberty, it is taboo for women to get married or become pregnant without having undergone initiation into adulthood.
