If you're going to jailbreak your iPhone or iPad, we strongly recommend that you back up the SHSH blobs on your device before you start.
With the release of the iPhone 3GS and the iPod Touch G3, Apple has added an extra layer of security to prevent hacking, jailbreaking and unlocking. Apple permanently closes the exploits used by jailbreak hackers by updating the firmware of its iPhone / iPt and iPad. If you accidentally upgrade your jailbroken device to the latest Apple firmware, you will not be able to jailbreak it until hackers have the new jailbreak software.
You can, however, demote your device to the previous version of the firmware that can be jailbroken – if you have your SHSH blobs in your file.
You can extract these SHSH records and save them with the help of a utility called Umbrella. Here's how:
Keep in mind that these records are firmware-specific and that at each update, you must repeat this procedure to record the records corresponding to the firmware version.
What you will need:
- Mac
- iPhone 3GS / iPod Touch G3 / iPad (no need to do it if you have an older device).
- Firmware Umbrella for Mac from Semaphore (version 2.2.2 or later)
Please backup your device to iTunes before following the procedure below.
Also note that your SHSH blobs are firmware specific and you must repeat this procedure to record the records of each firmware version.
1. Download the Umbrella firmware and extract the ZIP file. Double-click to open the folder, then extract the "Umbrella" application from the "Umbrella.dmg" file.
2. Open Terminal from / Applications / Utilities /, and enter the following command and press Return.
sudo /Applications/TextEdit.app/Contents/MacOS/TextEdit / etc / hosts
When you are prompted for the pbadword, type your Mac administrator pbadword and press Enter. A text editing window should appear.
3. Find a line containing "gs.apple.com", delete it, save and close the file. (NOTE: This line may not be there, in which case just close the file).
4. Open Umbrella and insert your ECID (if you do not already know it, enter the ECID of the device using this guide).
Choose your device and firmware version from the 'Device Version' drop-down list.
Now choose a 'SHSH Repository' from the drop-down menu.
- 'Apple' checks if SHSH is stored on their servers and backs up a copy locally.
- "Saurik – Cydia" checks if the SHSH is stored with Cydia, otherwise it will be stored locally and locally.
5. Press the "Submit" button. When the status becomes positive again in the lower left corner, the SHSH file must be uploaded in the same folder as the Umbrella application. (NOTE: The application may freeze briefly, but the OK message appears.)
