Belgium has agreed to host former Ivorian President Laurent Gbagbo after his acquittal in the international criminal court in The Hague, a spokesman for the Foreign Ministry said.
Karl Lagatie confirmed the agreement Saturday and added that he did not know if the former president was already in Belgium.
"This is also part of our support for international criminal tribunals," he added.
The ICC released Gbagbo on Friday after his shock acquittal last month on charges of crimes against humanity.
He and his badistant, Charles Blé Goudé, were released on January 15 following the wave of violence that followed the disputed elections in this West African country in 2010.
But he was initially detained after prosecutors said that if he was released, he would not be tried again if the January acquittal was overruled on appeal.
He was released on the condition of remaining in the host state until the court decides whether to leave a trial on appeal.
Gbagbo was the first former head of state to be tried before the ICC.
