His house
His house released in January 2020, but only managed to find a lot of traction later in the year. The British film follows couple Rial and Bol as they fled their war-torn village in South Sudan to start over in England. They find it difficult to adjust to their new life due to an evil lurking in their assigned home. The evil spirit threatens both their relationship and their sanity.
The horror film works because it is deeply disturbing. All along His house, it is clear that there is something the public does not know about Rial and Bol’s flight from their village to their new country. This underlying element of their story haunts them as much as the visions of the people of their tribe that they see all over the house. The mysterious reason behind everything is creating growing fear everywhere His house and explodes at the end of the movie, causing some well-deserved jump fears along the way.
Bloodride
Bloodride is a Norwegian horror anthology series released in March 2020. The show told six unique stories, mixing dark humor with sinister violence and terror. At the top of each episode, the camera slowly pans over a disturbing bus before zooming in on one of its passengers and telling that person’s unfortunate story. Just to make things even scarier, the bus is driven by a terrifying bus driver. It’s the perfect answer to fans of Black mirror who wanted a new season. Just like Black mirror, Bloodride offers bite-sized horror pieces, and often ends each story with a cruel twist of fate. But unlike Black mirror, Bloodride never really throws a bone to their audience in the form of a wandering happy ending. There is absolutely nothing joyful about this anthology series.

Horror is an often overlooked genre. It is considered more niche and is rarely recognized at major award ceremonies. I think of the end of things changes the conversation, proving there is depth to the genre. Based on a novel of the same name, the film follows an unnamed woman as she accompanies her boyfriend home to meet her parents for the first time. But the longer she stays with them, the more blurry the lines of what’s real and what isn’t.
I think of the end of things shamelessly twists the viewer’s mind, long after the credits roll. The film maintains the feeling of dread and unease all the time, really delivering the sense of psychological horror. Themes run deep into this film as well, as the double meaning of its title is revealed by the film’s ending. It’s the kind of surprise ending that’s teased from clues littered throughout the film, prompting the need for a second watch. Stellar performances by Jesse Plemons, Toni Collette and Jessie Buckley help I think of the end of things really pack a punch. It’s the sort of artistic, unsettling film that rarely gets a global platform like Netflix, but absolutely deserves it.
The babysitter: Killer Queen
The babysitter: Killer Queen is the sequel to 2017 The babysitter. The first film followed Cole as he realized his babysitter, Bee, was part of a Satanic cult. The sequel picks up two years later when no one believes Cole in what happened. But on an overnight trip with his classmates, the old cult of Bee returns from the dead and in search of blood. The babysitter: Killer Queen is just plain fun. It summons knots of B-horror, which is a subgenre rarely seen in recent years. Because of this, it’s obvious the actors had a blast making the movie. This joy is reflected on the screen, making it a fun watch for the audience.
Vampires vs. the Bronx
Vampires vs. the Bronx is a nice slice of cultural representation, as it shows a side of New York that isn’t often seen on screen. The horror comedy follows a group of teens from the Bronx. A group of vampires is moving through their neighborhood, so they take it upon themselves to protect the Bronx from vampires. The movie works because it perfectly blends two very different worlds into one perfectly silly comedic horror film. You would never expect to find a horde of vampires in the modern Bronx, but it ends up being a combination that offers something that many viewers will love.
The Haunting of Bly Manor
The Haunting of Bly Manor is arguably the best original horror content Netflix has released in 2020. Mike Flanagan’s sequel to his hit horror series The Haunting of Hill House launches a whole new ghost story. The show follows an American, Dani (Victoria Pedretti), as she takes on the role of housekeeper to orphans Miles and Flora in the English countryside. Dani soon realizes that something is wrong with the house and its residents.
Manor of Bly mixes horror and emotion in a largely unprecedented way. The audience may curl up in fear during one scene and wipe away a tear in the next. The series does this so well thanks to beautiful, detail-driven scripts implemented by an extremely talented cast. Manor of Bly is a love story and a ghost story rolled into one, making it an unforgettable watch. While this may have been the star of 2020, Manor of Bly was far from being NetflixThe only awesome original horror movie or TV show. We’ll be looking forward to seeing what new horror content the streaming giant releases in 2021.
