Taking advantage of the motion to convert the UDS Wa campus into an autonomous university known as the University of Commerce and Integral Development, Professor Yankah told Parliament that the Upper West region was one of the poorest in the country.

He also told Parliament that the university was part of the government's policy of having a public university in all parts of Ghana.

"This is in line with the government's policy of creating a publicly funded university in every region of the country," he said.

He added: "Faculty Development Studies, Faculty of Planning and Management, Business School and Faculty of Education; these programs will form the core of the new university.

"The transformation of the Wa campus into a full-fledged university was recommended because the Upper West region is the poorest in the country. The region must be developed with resources.

"Wa's campus is also far from Tamale. The upgrade provides local residents with access to higher education for national development and to improve the lives of local residents. "
