The Food and Drugs Authority (FDA) has said it has not approved the sale of a product believed to enhance or contribute to the growth of the beard as being the subject of an advertisement for certain products.
According to the head of the Inspection Division of Medical Devices, Cosmetics and Domestic Chemicals at the FDA, Dr. Joeffery Arthur, the authority could not vouch for creams, medicinal soaps, lotion powders, sprays and pills advertised primarily on social media platforms.
He advised the public to be wary of these products and to refrain from buying them.
No registration
Mr. Arthur pointed out that "the products intended for the growth of the beard and sold on the market were illegal".
The law clearly states that any food, drug, cosmetic product, household chemical or tobacco must be registered with the FDA to allow the establishment of the quality, safety and efficacy of the product before it is placed on the market. . But no beard growth product has undergone such a process, "he said.
"The importation of unregistered products into the market is due to the porous nature of Ghana's borders, but the FDA is doing its best to get these unapproved drugs off the market," he said.
He admitted, however, that the FDA had approved the use of certain products to facilitate the shaving of the beard. "
Craze of the beard
It will be remembered that the edition of Friday, February 17-23, 2017 of The Mirror published an article on the sudden craze for the beard of many young men.
According to the publication, it is common to see men with long beard beautifully shaved in taxis, trotro, television, billboards, online and even on our workplaces. In addition, male celebrities such as actors and musicians have also joined the craze.
In the past, long beards were an obstacle for most women and meant an automatic failure for potential job seekers, as they were considered neglected, unlike their well-shaved counterparts who earned all the honors of gentlemen .
It is interesting to note that history has changed today, with women being easily attracted to bearded men because they see them a little badier and still have a place in the labor market.
For some, growing a beard is not just a fashion statement, but satisfying one's inner being; it's about being a man.
Research shows that a beard is a sign of active testosterone in the body and that the human brain is aware of it with increased potential for aggression.
As a result, men with beards are often perceived as more angry, aggressive or dominant, even if their personality has none of these traits.
It is in this respect that the FDA recommends that men do not run after a product just to grow their beards.
Medical advice
Reacting to the craze for body enhancement products, Dr. Emmanuel Lartey, a doctor at Mother-Love Hospital, advised the public to use these products, saying that Negative effects far outweighed the immediate benefits.
Dr. Lartey said that many products contain harmful chemicals that affect certain organs of the body.
"In most cases, I have had to deal with people who use these products and who end up having serious health problems such as kidney failure, headaches, l? insomnia and skin cancer. Those who introduce badl tightening products eventually close the hole completely.
"It is better to avoid such products than to waste huge sums of money to treat side effects," he advised.
Traders
A trader at the Tema subway station, which sells body enhancement creams, told the Mirror that she had sold the products because of the public interest.
"Selling these products is very profitable because people almost always come in search of products for one reason or another. Some even order for delivery at a cost. However, most people who buy products prefer not to talk about the effectiveness of the products, so I do not really know if it works or not. But there are people who keep asking for the same product and that means it's good for them, "she said.
Aunt Sandra said that many of the products were imported and some were manufactured in the country.
She also mentioned that there were distributors who brought the products.
Another businessman from the Central Business District (CBD) in Accra, who pleaded for anonymity, said that the products for body enhancement were the most favored among the other products sold.
"Although I am selling most enhancement products such as badl tightening, beard growth, skin whitening and badual pleasure products, bad enlargement products, hips, bad and the penis bring me more money than all the other drugs and cosmetics I sell, "she explained.
