Dr Vladimir Antwi-Danso, dean of the Ghana Armed Forces Command and Staff College (GAFCSC), has said he expects new US President Joe Biden to promote global multilateralism.
He said the pursuit of multilateralism, which referred to an alliance of several countries pursuing a common goal, would ensure that the United States takes its rightful position to provide global leadership.
Dr Antwi-Danso said this in an interview with the Ghana News Agency in Accra on President Biden’s inauguration, which took place at the Capitol in Washington DC on January 20.
The dean recalled that in the days of former President Donald Trump, the multilateral approach to world affairs had been attacked.
Former President Trump’s program was “America First,” however, Dr. Antwi-Danso noted that President Biden was more likely to take a corporate approach to international issues.
“Biden comes soon after Trump is very important; because it looks like Biden is the direct opposite of Trump and therefore Biden has a lot to fix on his plate.
Dr Antwi-Danso said that on the home front, President Biden must first and foremost unite the United States and ensure that democracy as known in the United States prevails.
Internationally, the Dean argued that multilateralism had started to go wrong under former President Trump due to his withdrawal from several multilateral organizations and from several multilateral agreements such as the Paris Agreement on climate change, the The Iran Nuclear Deal that harms the international community.
Dr Antwi-Danso said global multilateralism is the way forward, arguing that unilateralism and harassment have no place in the global arena.
He said President Biden had the role of repairing the damage done to multilateralism by his predecessor.
“And I think one of the first things President Biden did was show he is for multilateralism. He’s not going to threaten the UN, he’s not going to threaten what the world says we should be doing, he’s not going to threaten the International Criminal Court (ICC), and he’s not going to threaten the World Health Organization (WHO) and things like that, ”said the dean.
“So the reversal we have seen him do is a sign that he is going to mend the multilateral nature of world politics today. Dr Antwi-Danso reiterated that this was an indication that President Biden wanted to put America back to where America was – “that’s world leadership.”
He said President Biden wanted to show the world that American leadership was coming back through liberalism, globalization and multilateralism.
He said President Biden’s leadership meant a lot to Africa, saying that when multilateral organizations such as the ICC and WHO worked well, Africa and the rest of the developing world would benefit greatly. He said that when President Biden takes office, world leaders “seem to say that we can now see a better world.”
Dr Antwi-Danso reiterated that Biden’s expectations from the global community appeared to be very high.
He said the biggest challenge to anything President Biden would do was how to tackle the COVID-19 problem, stating that “we don’t know where COVID is leading us.”
Regarding the return of the United States to the Paris Climate Agreement, Dr Antwi-Danso said: “This is a big plus. Everyone says hurray! Because the world is dying little by little and for it to come back to the Paris agreement, I think we must all applaud him for that ”.
The dean said humanity needs the order of the Paris Agreement on climate change to support the world.
“And America is a big player, once America sneezes we all cough. And therefore, if America joins with us, then we are all on the ground supporting the world. For the environmentalist, it’s a plus and for all of us, it’s a plus.
He called on President Biden to help remake the world on live-and-life principles, saying, “A kind of mutual respect. Mutually beneficial principles and if that happens the world will be more peaceful ”.
He said that the US president must cooperate with the so-called prestigious enemies, namely China and Russia, in order to “kind of make the world a liveable place.”
“For everyone, we must also try to help America for America to recognize that there is another part of the world, and therefore multilateralism is the principle of global governance,” he said. declared.
