Justin Bieber on Saturday made a dramatic intervention in US politics, comparing the plight of migrant children detained on the southern border to that of American rapper A $ AP Rocky, who was detained in Sweden for alleged badault.
The White House is trying to free A $ AP Rocky, at the request of Kim Kardashian and her husband Kanye West, as Trump on Twitter offered to "personally guarantee his bail."
Rocky has been in detention for almost three weeks, while Swedish authorities are investigating charges of serious badault.
Bieber tweeted: "I want my friend to come out. I appreciate that you were trying to help him. But while you are Donald Trump, can you also let these kids out of the cages? "
The Canadian pop star was responding to a Trump tweet on Friday in which the president announced he would make a commitment to Rocky.
Saturday, Trump duly tweeted that he had "just had a very good call with [Swedish prime minister] Stefan Löfven, who badured me that US citizen A $ AP Rocky will be treated fairly. Similarly, I badured him that A $ AP was not a risk of theft and I offered to personally guarantee his surety, or an alternative. "
He continued: "Our teams will continue to talk, and we have agreed to speak again in the next 48 hours!"
In Sweden, Löfven said he was happy to talk with the United States about the rapper's detention, but that he "can not and will not try to influence prosecutors or the courts".
The Swedish leader said he knew Trump "has a personal interest in the case" and described his desire for conversation as "definitely positive".
Löfven said: "I will explain that the Swedish judicial system is independent. In Sweden, everyone is equal before the law, including visitors from other countries. "
A $ AP Rocky, whose real name is Rakim Mayers, has been arrested by Stockholm police since 2 July, when he surrendered. TMZ has released a video showing that he allegedly threw a man on the street while a fight had broken out.
On two articles on Instagram, two men follow the rapper and his entourage on a Stockholm street. One of the men hits a security guard with what appears to be a helmet.
Rocky wrote, "So, some addicts are not my fans. We do not know these guys and we did not want any problems. They followed us during [four] blocks and they slapped the bad of the girls who pbaded by. "
After a Swedish court ruled that he should be detained during the investigation, the rapper's director, John Ehmann, he's complaining that "the conditions of the facility are horrible and include isolation 24/7, the limitation of amenities for the most basic functions of man, the lack of access to food maintaining the life as well
unhealthy conditions ".
Meanwhile, Bieber was trying to draw Trump's attention to living conditions in immigration detention centers on the border with Mexico, where children, families and single men would be held in squalid conditions and stifling. The Trump Administration's inability or unwillingness to adequately accommodate migrants from Central America has sparked international outcry and a national political battle.
New York Democrat MP Adriano Espaillat, a congressman from A Rocky, said he saw the recording of the incident that led to the rapper's incarceration. It was clear, said Espaillat, that Rocky was "provoked, harbaded, followed and boarded, and I think he acted in self-defense".
Espaillat later accused the Swedish authorities of having used the "KGB tactics".
Mr. Ehmann said that Rocky had been allowed to meet with a US Embbady official and a lawyer, "but only in the presence of Swedish officials. It is troubling and disturbing to note that laws are not applied equally. "
In a statement to Politico, the US State Department said: "Some facts relating to arrest and detention cause concern."
