Big banks will reduce the recruitment of graduates

Officials of Japan's largest banks have announced that they will reduce their recruitment of university graduates next spring.

MUFG Bank plans to hire 530 graduates in 2020. This represents a drop of almost half compared to the 950 registered this year.

This will be the sixth year in a row that the bank will reduce its basic hires. Bank officials cited a reduction in office work due to computer upgrades and planned branch closures. And more and more employees are choosing to return to work after their maternity leave.

Sumitomo Mitsui Banking Corporation anticipates a smaller discount. 600 university graduates will be hired next year, 50 fewer than this year.

Mizuho Financial Group is considering a reduction of 20%, less drastic than this year, when it was reduced by about half.
