The rising independent quartet Big Thief surprisingly released a new song called “Certainty” which was written and recorded straight to 4 tracks during a three day power outage. The recorder was plugged into a cigarette lighter, according to the advertisement.
Guitarist Buck Meek explained the complicated and rigged recording process. “On the third day of the blackout, I found Adrianne on the porch writing a new song, so I sat down with her and we finished it together, the rain falling from the gutters splashing our guitars,” he said in the ad. “James and Sam saw us writing and quickly set up a four-track tape recorder in the kitchen, powered by the F250 cigarette lighter in the backyard. They set up the drums near the sink and Max plugged his bass into a Bluetooth speaker above the stove. Take 2 barked a lot from Sam and Hannah’s puppy, Jan during the solo, but we ended up going with take 3 because it took us so long to learn the chords. Then we made pancakes and sausage and had breakfast for dinner.
The recording took place during sessions at Sam Evian’s Flying Cloud Studios, with harmonies by Hannah Cohen.
The group begins a month-long U.S. tour tonight in Kentucky – full dates appear below.
