CHADRON, Neb. (WOWT) – A helicopter crew helped the Nebraska Game & Parks Commission capture and treat the bighorn in the state's panhandle, allowing some sheep to take off earlier this week.

Volunteers from South Dakota State University also helped the NGPC capture and treat 48 sheep on Monday and Tuesday.

According to a statement from the NGPC, wildlife professionals have been closely monitoring the bighorn sheep of Nebraska in recent years to combat diseases, including Mycoplasma pneumonia.

Seven Pine Ridge ewes with chronic diseases were taken to SDSU in Brookings for further study, the statement said.

The sheep treated this week received new tracking necklaces and ear tags. They also underwent a series of tissue samples and vaccinations to help study the mortality of lambs before they were released.

The helicopter crew was instructed to remain in Cornhusker State until the end of the week to capture the mule deer in a study conducted by the University of Nebraska.
