BANGOR, Maine – Insulin is essential for the survival of those struggling with diabetes. Rescue drugs have seen a dramatic increase in prices in recent years.
"It's been a struggle, but we're doing what we can," said Linda Boone, who is raising her 15-year-old grandson, a Type 1 diabetic.
"He can not leave without insulin – he would die without it," said Boone.
Boone used discount cards and medications to find more affordable insulin for her grandson. Many in the country take the same steps to try to afford it.
"Nothing justifies the huge price increases we have seen," said Republican Senator Susan Collins of Maine.
In an attempt to fight the rising costs of an essential drug, Senator Collins and other senators have proposed a two-party bill to limit costs.

The bill, entitled "Insulin Price Reduction Act", aims to hold drug benefit managers, pharmaceutical companies and insurers responsible for soaring insulin prices. by encouraging catalog price reductions.
"Insulin becomes unaffordable for some people with diabetes who depend on it for their survival," said Senator Collins.

The bill is intended to help families like Boone, who are doing everything in their power and still striving to find the necessary funds to pay for the insulin needed.
"I went for his insulin and it was $ 453 for a month 's supply and it was with a $ 100 discount card," Boone said. "I said, I must do something, I will go broke at this price."
Boone has always been able to provide insulin to his grandson, but it is not easy. The bill would allow families like the Boones to live more freely without having to worry about the price of drugs.
"It would be nice if we reduced the price of insulin so that people could afford it and not have to choose," Boone said.
