Organizers have revealed that Here Today, which was directed and co-written by the When Harry Met Sally star, will close the curtain on the rebooted event with a gala screening at the Filmhouse.

Crystal stars alongside Tiffany Haddish as a comedy writer who forges an unlikely friendship with a singer in the film set in New York City, which will premiere in the UK at the festival ahead of its September release.

The EIFF is due to bring the hearings back after a hiatus of more than two years next month.

Last year’s event was forced to be fully online due to the pandemic, while this year’s edition, which will feature an online schedule as well as a mix of indoor and outdoor screenings, has been brought back to the EIFF’s traditional August slot in the calendar to cater for a wider audience if restrictions are relaxed.

Crystal, 73, who made a name for herself on Saturday Night Live and Soap TV shows, found her name in the 1980s and 1990s in the hit films Running Scared, The Princess Bridge, When Harry Met Sally, Analyze This and City Slickers. It has hosted the Oscars nine times a day.

Crystal said: “I am delighted that Here Today has been selected to close the Edinburgh International Film Festival.

“To have an audience sitting together in a movie theater and sharing the experience of this movie after these unusual times makes me very happy.”

The festival will hold most of its premieres at the Filmhouse, with outdoor screenings planned at Port Edgar Marina in South Queensferry and St Andrew Square Garden.

Nick Varley, Senior Festival Programmer this year, said: “We are delighted to close this year’s festival with Here Today.

“Billy Crystal has created a wonderfully charming and touching film about friendship and aging.

“The onscreen chemistry between him and Tiffany Haddish is just a pleasure to watch. Bring your tissues and get ready to shed tears of laughter and sadness.”
