Bishop Daniel Obinim, head of the Godsway International Church, sued the Ghana Revenue Authority (GRA) for seizing his Fidelity Bank account for non-payment of taxes.
In a report observed by YEN.com.gh on Citinewsroom.com, the complaint follows a notice of garnishment issued by the GRA on June 27, 2019 by the Commissioner of Fidelity Bank to hold the account of Bishop Obinim with the bank.
The notification was made following a letter sent by the Authority on 18 December 2018 to Bishop Obinim requesting the payment of the tax payable in the amount of 719,890 GHc.

The GRA estimates that the amount represents taxes for the period 2014-2018 on a block of 21 store units located in Tema and owned by Mgr Daniel Obinim.
The tax authorities are also looking for 690,900.00 GHc, the total value-added tax (VAT) levied for the period from 1 January 2016 to 31 July 2018, to the commercial activities of Abroso Guest House Limited, a separate liability company. limited presumed to be under the direction of Bishop Obinim.
But in the lawsuit filed by Bishop Obinim's lawyers, the man of God states that he owes no money to the tax administration because he has discharged all his tax obligations .

He maintained in the trial that GRA was aware "Abroso Guest House Limited was a separate company duly registered under the laws of Ghana and is limited to shares of which: [Obinim] has held the office of one of the three directors of the company and has no direct or indirect control in the management of said company. "
He therefore asks the court for an order canceling or striking out the garnishment notice sent to Fidelity Bank.
In addition, Bishop Obinim prays for "A perpetual injunction order restricting the second defendant [Fidelity Bank] place a lien on the applicant's bank accounts and pay the funds held in the applicant's bank accounts and fixed term deposits to the first respondent with respect to the garnishment notice issued. "
