Bitmain Announces New, More Effective 7nm Bitcoin Mining Chip

Bitmain Technologies announced a new 7-nanometer bitcoin mining processor that would offer new levels of energy efficiency.

The new ASIC (application-specific integrated circuit), called BM1397, would bring improvements in performance, chip size, and power efficiency for SHA256-based crypto-operating currencies, such as bitcoin (BTC) and cash bitcoin (BCH).

Made using a 7 nm FinFET process from Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing, Bitmain chip supplier, the BM1397 will absorb less electricity than previous Bitmain offerings, delivering a computer-to-computer ratio. "As low as 30J / TH," according to an announcement on Monday.

Bitmain says:

"This is a 28.6% improvement in energy efficiency compared to Bitain's previous 7 nm processor, the BM1391. To achieve this, the Bitmain engineering team carefully adapted the chip design to optimize its architecture, circuitry and economy.

The new ASIC will be integrated with the new Antminer mining devices – the S17 and T17 – which Bitmain has indicated will be detailed at a later date.

The announcement comes shortly after the mining giant unveiled its latest Antminers – the S15 and T15 – in November, both equipped with the ASIC BM1391.

Bitmain also launched last year ASIC miners for crypto-currencies zcash and ethereum. This development prompted the ethereum open source development community to agree tentatively in January to implement a new algorithm that would limit ASIC operation on the network, pending further testing of the required code, ProgPoW.

However, ProgPoW was delayed earlier this month in favor of conducting audits to evaluate the effectiveness of the method.
