Former Deputy Minister of Youth and Sports Joseph Yamin refused to admit that the Black Stars’ performance at the 2014 World Cup was abysmal.

The West African giants were eliminated from the tournament’s group stage for the first time after collecting just one point in three games.

In an interview with Nana Aba Anamoah on Starr FM, Joseph Yamin said the team’s performance was good despite an early start.

“I wouldn’t call the Black Stars’ performance in Brazil abysmal,” he said when asked if the team’s performance was good for him.

The Black Stars lost their first game to the United States before holding the future German champions to a 2-2 draw.

But ahead of the final game, the team demanded a ransom from the country, insisting they would not play the final game against Portugal if their appearance fees were not paid.

This forced the government of the day to send $ 4 million by air to Brazil to pay the players.

Key team members Sulley Muntari and Kevin Prince-Boateng had to be fired from camp for misconduct, leaving the Black Stars surrounded by controversy.

With the West Africans unstable, they lost their last game against Portugal 2-1 to miss the round of 16.

The former minister said they need to send the money to the players to avoid embarrassment.

“I accepted that we send money to the Black Stars at the time, I was deputy sports minister because it was the only way we had and the players insisted that they wanted their money, ”he said.

“The point is, Ghanaians love football and the players could have boycotted the game [in Brazil] which would have embarrassed us so we had to meet them halfway and that’s what we did, “he added.

Earlier, Yen.com.gh reported that the former vice minister of Youth and Sports, Joseph Yamin, revealed that he had agreed to send money to Brazil to settle Black Stars players who were wronged during the World Cup.

The Sports Department had to steal $ 4 million to pay for unpaid bonuses and player appearance fees at the 2014 World Cup.

In an interview with Starr FM, Joseph Yamin said the decision was taken to avoid embarrassment as the players threatened to boycott their last group game against Portugal.
