While Facebook continues crypto, crypto pursues social media.
Block.one, the multi-billion dollar team that built the EOSIO platform, is the latest blockchain company to aspire to social media. Announced Saturday, the new platform will call Voice.
The company says its new social network will stand out by not turning users into products.
In a statement, CEO Brendan Blumer said:
"Our content. Our data. Our attention These are all incredibly valuable things. But for now, it's the platform, not the user, that is reaping the reward. By design, they sell our auction information to advertisers, raking in profits and flooding our feeds with hidden agendas dictated by the highest bidder. The voice changes that.
Voice will work on the EOS blockchain, which also switches to a faster version 2.0. By using the public channel, everything posted on EOS will be public. For its part, Facebook, the world's leading social network, announced earlier this year that it was going to go in the opposite direction: CEO Mark Zuckerberg presented a "vision of social networking focused on confidentiality" .
Previous attempts
Until now, social media cryptography projects were very similar to Tumblr or Medium, with occasional imitation of Twitter. A spokesperson for the Block.one project has not responded to a request for CoinDesk's comment on the type of experience to be expected on the new site.
While the argument for encouraging contributions is compelling, the model has struggled to understand.
For example, in 2016, Tsu, a social network that promised to share profits with its users, was closed. He claimed to have 5.2 million users at the end of the service. A frequent complaint about Tsu was that his promise of pay generated spammy behavior.
Steemit, meanwhile, is the medium type social network built on the Steem blockchain. According to Dapp.com, it was the only big blockchain dapp where social media was the main use case, with 93% of users touching its social dapps (which Steemit dominates). A recent May estimate puts active users at 75,644 during this month.
Since then, other cryptographic social networks have developed, such as Coil (which uses XRP) and Cent (which uses ETH).
Dapp.com estimated that Steem had over 386,000 active users for the year, while giving EOS just over 171,000 active users in 2018, of which 67% used its betting products.
It should be noted that EOS had only six months to build a user base. After a one – year ICO generating more than $ 4 billion for Block.one, EOS was officially launched on June 15, 2018.
