The National Steering Committee of the Blue Oceans Conference has started to implement the Call-To-Action adopted by the stakeholders at the events organized from 18 to 22 March 2019 in Monrovia, with a beach cleaning exercise.
The first phase of cleanup took place on Friday, July 5, 2019 at Kru Town Beach in Robertsport, Grand Cape Mount County.
The National Steering Committee includes the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) as Chair, the LiMA (Liberia Maritime Authority), the Co-Chairs, the National Fisheries and Aquaculture Authority (NaFAA) and its international partners, the Swedish Embbady in Monrovia. and Conservation International (CI).
The clean-up exercise of July 5, 2019 brought together more than 100 people from local communities, including thirty-four (34) students from Robertsport High School; two groups of women: one from Kru Town with thirty-three (33) people and one from Robertsport who brought twenty (20) people; Community of the City of Kru, twenty-five (25); Enisul Fisheries, eight (8); Liberia Surf Affiliation, six (6) and B.E.S.T. Liberia, seven (7).
Representatives of the member institutions of the National Steering Committee, including Mr. Levi Z. Piah, Chief Technical Advisor, EPA; Mr. Konah Kaliku, Environmental Inspector, LiMA; Mr. Anthony Yokie, Environmental Supervisor, NaFAA; Mr. Jenkins Flahwor, National Program Manager for Energy at the Swedish Embbady in Monrovia; and Mr. Victor Smith – project director GEF Mangrove, CI were present to honor the event.
The Blue Oceans team was welcomed by Robertsport Mayor, Mr. J. Edwin Korha and members of the Kru-Town community. Mayor Korha and his team collaborated with the Blue Oceans team and directed them to various people and companies already arranging beach clean-ups, such as John Adams of the Collaboration Management Association (CMA), Enisul Fisheries to Fabolia Kamara and students from Robertsport High School.
Together, we have collected over 50 large black garbage bags of plastic debris, garbage and other non-nameable non-oceanic waste.
The Mayor of Robertsport, Korha and the Chief of the City both expressed their gratitude for the event and their commitment to continue cleaning the beach.
The second phase of beach cleaning is scheduled for Friday, July 12, 2019 in Marshall City Margibi County.
The Blue Oceans Liberia team donated four barrels, ten rakes, ten shovels and wooden brooms to the town of Robertsport to support their beach cleanup efforts.
The Mayor, J. Edwin Korha, encouraged members of the city to keep the beaches clean and promised to provide support by making the tools available to the beach cleaning teams. Groups wishing to use the tools can go to City Hall and sign the materials.
F. Kamara, a local business owner, also encouraged beach clean-ups by offering fishermen a place to support local groups and organizations willing to do the work.
The Liberia Surf Affiliation has already scheduled to start cleaning the Kru-Town beach every Friday morning, and the participants of the B.S.S.T. Liberia will join them every Friday. The culture of a clean beach is encouraged and supported by all members of the community and its government agencies.
