Election results released so far by the Ugandan Election Commission, the national tallying center, indicate that outgoing President Yoweri Museveni maintains an early lead over his main challenger Robert Kyagulanyi, popularly known as Bobi Wine.
According to the BBC, 23.9% of all polling stations show President Museveni leading with more than 65% in the presidential poll which took place in the country on Thursday, January 14.
A quick summation of the votes awarded to Museveni from 8,310 polling stations was 1,536,205 votes (65.02%), while Wine won 647,146 votes (27.39%).
Bobi Wine alleges electoral fraud
In another report, Ugandan opposition leader Bobi Wine alleged that the presidential election was marred by widespread fraud and violence.
TV channels citing AFP as its source noted that the former popstar-turned-lawmaker did not give details of his accusation as he said in a tweet shared on his Twitter page on Thursday.
Wine, who stayed positive as votes were counted under an internet outage, was able to bypass the block and tweet around 10:14 p.m.
The 38-year-old’s claim contradicts the government’s claim that the elections were conducted peacefully and no major cases of violence were reported.
The internet went down for a third day as the vote count continued across the country. The results are expected on Saturday afternoon.
Meanwhile, YEN.com.gh reported that President Yoweri Museveni of Uganda was approved by the executive committee of the country’s ruling party, the National Resistance Movement.
According to the ruling party, he endorsed Museveni as his presidential candidate because the 76-year-old is popular.
Museveni, who has been president since 1986, took up the leadership torch after a five-year guerrilla war, making him one of Africa’s longest-serving leaders.
