A body was found in the debris of the plane, which crashed with Cardiff striker Emiliano Sala and pilot David Ibbotson on board, the investigation branch said. Air Accidents (AAIB).

The plane Piper Malibu was found Sunday morning at the bottom of the Channel, but strong tides prevented the operation of removal of the body.

In a statement, the AAIB said: "After a thorough visual examination of the accident site using the remote-controlled vehicle (ROV), it was decided to attempt a salvage operation.

"Under difficult conditions, the AAIB and its specialized subcontractors managed to recover the body previously found in the middle of the wreckage." The operation was conducted in the most dignified manner possible and families were informed of the progress of the work.

"Unfortunately, attempts to recover the wreckage from the aircraft were unsuccessful before bad weather forced us to return the ROV to the ship.The weather forecast being poor in the foreseeable future, the decision difficult to put an end to all operations was taken.

The plane disappeared on 21 January when it was flying from Sala de Nantes to Cardiff, just days after making a transfer of club record on the side of the Premier League.
