Boko Haram killed four farmers

Boko Haram jihadists killed four farmers near the town of Maiduguri in northeastern Nigeria during the latest bloodbath in the troubled region, witnesses and a local militia leader said Monday.

Dozens of fighters suspected of being loyal to Boko Haram faction leader Abubakar Shekau on Monday attacked a group of farmers working in their field near Jiddari-Polo, farmers who have survived l & # 39; attack.

"They came on foot many times as we gathered cowpeas on the ground and arrested six of us while others escaped," Umara told AFP.

Babakura Kolo, head of the civil militia in the city, confirmed the killings.

Umara, 75, was spared by the militants with a message to Nigerian troops stationed in Jiddari-Polo that they had to prepare for an impending attack from the jihadists.

"They have asked me to convey to the soldiers that they should be ready for an attack soon."

"They told me the same message three times and insisted that I pbad it on to the soldiers," Umara said.

Abba Muhammad was also one of the farmers who escaped when the militants stormed the fields.

"Five of them, armed with guns and machetes, surrounded me and started asking me where the soldiers were in Jiddari-Polo," he said.

"One of them shouted that they should attack me with machetes but I stuck instinctively."

Boko Haram has intensified its attacks on farmers and loggers in recent years, accusing them of transmitting information about the group to the army.

Last week, jihadists killed nine farmers and kidnapped another 12 in an attack on Mammanti village near Maiduguri.

On 16 November, the insurgents abducted 50 loggers near Gamboru town, on the Cameroonian border, four days after 15 peasants were shot dead while working in their fields near the Monguno garrison town, Maiduguri is 140 km away.

Last month, jihadists murdered 12 farmers in Kalle, a remote village 17 km from Maiduguri.

Although the government insists that Boko Haram is on the verge of defeat, the group has recently carried out major attacks on military and civilian targets, causing numerous casualties.

According to security sources, at least 44 soldiers were killed during an attack in Metele village near the border with Niger last week, although a fleeing soldier worried more.

AFP has reported at least 17 attempts to overtake army bases since July.
