But a second bomber was shot down by troops deployed in the city before she could blow up her explosives, the source said.
"A suicide bomber blew himself up in Amchide this morning at the Nigerian border," a regional security source said, speaking on condition of anonymity and reporting 29 wounded.
The attack took place on market day, while the city was packed with buyers early in the morning, said a local civil defense group official.
"There were a lot of people injured, I saw about 20," he said. "After the attack, the market is emptied."
In 2014, Amchide was once a bustling commercial center and was at the forefront of a major battle between Cameroonian troops and Boko Haram militants, who for several months held the Nigerian city of Banki.
The violence forced most residents to flee the city, although some began to return.
After repelling Boko Haram, the Cameroonian army has dug long trenches around Amchide and even inside the city to thwart new jihadist incursions.
