Boris Johnson confirms fans return date and capacity for Wembley Euro 2020 matches

Boris Johnson has confirmed that football fans will be able to return to the stadiums from May 17 at the earliest.

Up to 10,000 people or a quarter of the capacity, whichever is smaller, will be allowed in larger venues, such as Wembley.

But smaller stadiums will be limited to 4,000 people or half their capacity, whichever is lower.

This means fans could return for the Premier League’s final day on May 23.

The restrictions hope to be lifted again on June 21 – which will have an impact on this summer’s Euro 2020 tournament, delayed by 12 months.

Wembley is set to host seven matches in the tournament, including England’s three group matches, a 16-time draw, the two semi-finals and the final.

Up to 10,000 people are expected to attend England’s first two group matches against Croatia and Scotland on June 13 and 18 respectively.

But larger crowds could be allowed for the third game against the Czech Republic on June 22, and it is hoped that the final on July 11 can be played in front of a capacity crowd at the national stadium.

The lifting of the restrictions is expected to come too early for the Carabao Cup final between Manchester City and Tottenham on April 25 and the FA Cup final on May 15.

But fans could be in attendance for the EFL qualifiers finals for the Championship and Leagues One and Two, which take place on May 29 and 31.
