Boris Johnson was elected new Conservative leader on a party vote and will become the next British prime minister.

He beat Jeremy Hunt in a poll of conservative members, winning 92,153 votes to 46,656 for Hunt.

The former mayor of London succeeds Theresa May on Wednesday.

Mr. Johnson began his thank you speech by congratulating his successor, saying that it was "a privilege to sit in his cabinet".

Nearly 160,000 votes were cast, representing a participation rate of 87.4%.

Some 160,000 members of the Conservative Party had been voting by mail for two and a half weeks. Johnson eliminated his challenger Jeremy Hunt and was revealed as the new prime minister shortly before the local London time.

Former mayor of London and former British Foreign Secretary, Johnson was the favorite since Theresa May announced that she would step down after failing to reach an agreement on Brexit with the EU.
