BOSTON – Boston College is taking "aggressive precautionary measures" to alleviate a norovirus epidemic that has affected dozens of students.
In an update for students and faculty, Dr. Thomas Nary, director of health services and university services, said dozens of their 14,400 students were reported to Health Services the same day. last week with symptoms related to gastrointestinal disease.
Given the contagious nature of norovirus, BC maintenance staff has taken several steps to limit the spread of the disease on campus.
Staff continually disinfects commonly touched surfaces on campus, particularly in washrooms and residences. Salad bars in the dining rooms were closed and self-service food was removed, according to measures approved by the Department of Public Health.
"The university will remain vigilant and maintain these procedures to ensure the health and well-being of our university community, even as this wave of illness continues to ease," said Dr. Nary.
In an ongoing effort to help curb the spread of the disease, students are encouraged to take the following precautions:
• Wash your hands with soap and water for at least 20 seconds, several times a day.
• Clean touch surfaces frequently, including cell phones, laptops, and keyboards.
• Avoid sharing kitchen utensils, containers, and other personal items.
• Packs of friends are available in the dining rooms for friends and roommates who may feel sick.
