Patients wishing to undergo cosmetic procedures will undergo additional tests for mental health problems, it was announced.
Staff from some providers offering treatments such as Botox and fillers will be trained to detect conditions such as Body Dysmorphic Disorder (BDD), which makes people obsessed with perceived defects in their appearance.
Clients will then be referred to the NHS clinics if necessary.
The measures will be introduced only during practices registered with the Joint Council for Cosmetic Practitioners, following a meeting with the NHS England.
However, other providers who are not registered will not have to comply, which could put patients at risk.
The NHS National Medical Director, Professor Stephen Powis, hailed this news, but said the NHS would be responsible for "picking up the pieces" from private providers "acting like a law in its own right."
He said, "The NHS long-term plan dramatically expands some of the best mental health services in the world, but we can not just pick up the pieces. We need all components of the company to exercise due diligence and take steps to avoid preventable damage & # 39;
He added that "idealized images" help "fuel an epidemic of mental health and anxiety".

Superdrug, which offers Botox and dermal fillers at its flagship store in London, agreed in January to track clients' mental health issues before proceeding with the procedures.
Kitty Wallace of the BDD Foundation said, "Cosmetic procedures like Botox, now widely used in shopping streets, put people at risk and can have negative effects on the mental health of young people.
"We know that people with BDD are more likely to turn to" fast fix "procedures that ultimately do not treat or help the underlying psychological state.
"The BDD affects one in 50 people, causes considerable distress and has a huge impact on the quality of life.
"It's great to see the NHS and the professionals leading the radical change, but now we need all the elements of society to change their minds and take action to protect the vulnerable."
