Bournemouth debuts with 19-year-old goalkeeper Mark Travers against Tottenham

Bournemouth gave goalkeeper Mark Travers, 19, his first-team debut in their Premier League game against Tottenham on Saturday at lunchtime.

A native of the Irish town of Maynooth in County Kildare, Travers has already received a call for the first time in the Republic of Ireland team.

He was selected by Mick McCarthy for his Euro 2020 playoffs against Gibraltar and Georgia in March, though he did not play.

He also hit the fierce shot of Tottenham's Lucas Moura in the first period.

However, Travers now has the chance to impress Bournemouth's debut, which he joined then aged 17 in July 2016 as a result of a successful lawsuit.

Bournemouth manager Eddie Howe said before the game, "We put a lot of importance on Mark. He has a lot of character, an excellent attitude and a huge potential. It's a chance for him to show what he can do.

At 19 and 351 days, Travers is the first teen goalie to make his Premier League appearance since Joe Hart in October 2006. The English goalkeeper was 19 and 178 days old when he played for Manchester City against Sheffield United.

A club insider said some members of the Vitality Stadium thought Travers was the best goalkeeper in the club, even better than the senior players.

Changes should be made to the warden's department during the summer. A new first choice should be introduced, and Travers is offered a chance to badert his claim.

He started with the Dublin-based junior club, Cherry Orchard, before joining the youth group formed by Irish team Shamrock Rovers in July 2015.

In Bournemouth, Travers is considered the best goalkeeper registered in the club's records.

Initially, Travers worked with the under-21 team in Bournemouth before being promoted to first-team with goalkeeper coach Neil Moss.

He spent the first half of the 2017-18 season on loan at Weymouth in the South Division of the Premier League.

And his debut was certainly memorable when he scored with a token from within his own half to win the Terras 3-2 win at Bishop's Stortford.

Indeed, the last senior football game of Travers was for Weymouth at Gosport Borough on New Year's Day 2018 in front of a crowd of 418 people.

But he signed a long-term contract with Bournemouth in July 2018 and has just helped their reserves to win the Central League Cup, while maintaining the 2-0 win against Notts County at Meadow Lane.

Travers now has the chance to prove himself on a bigger stage while Tottenham, one of the top four pursuers, goes to Bournemouth.
