The Boko Haram terrorists reportedly captured Marte, the headquarters of the Marte Local Government Area, in the state of Borno.

The Daily Trust reports that the insurgents stormed the Marte military base, the 153rd Task Force Battalion, firing sporadically and in doing so, shaved everything.

A military source reportedly said on Monday: "The insurgents do not seem to have intended to hurt civilians, only to seize the town, so they attacked the military base, taking troops unannounced around 6 pm (Sunday), which is much less than an hour to break their break time.

"We engaged them in a fierce meeting for about an hour. At first, we were about to win the victory over them, but they overpowered us and all the flaming base troops were torn to pieces, and we all fled in all directions in the bush.

"I can tell you that we were about to defeat them; but God knows the tactics they have deployed later and the defeat has turned against us; we all fled; they control the city now.

According to another fleeing source, "the number of victims can not be confirmed on both sides, we are all fleeing into the bush in all directions, many of us finding the way to Maiduguri, and the majority still wandering in the Bush.

"Many of us lucky enough to find our way to Maiduguri or any safe community will take refuge in their home states across the country to relieve themselves of the trauma."

This development comes a few days after General Tukur Buratai, Chief of Staff of the Army, said that Boko Haram had been defeated.

According to him, the Nigerian army is now fighting an international criminal gang known as the Islamic State of West Africa (ISWAP).
