President Muhammadu Buhari on Friday condemned the allegation that he was planning to Islamize Nigeria.

His spokesman, Femi Adesina, said in a statement that, before the next elections, unscrupulous Nigerians again falsely and wickedly claimed that the government's goal was to impose Islam in Nigeria.

He said: "The goal is clearly to fan the religious divide for political gain. Some of these same people made these sneaky and fabricated statements before the 2015 elections. They failed miserably.

"The President firmly affirms the oath he has taken to the people of Nigeria to faithfully defend the Constitution of Nigeria. This constitution guarantees freedom of worship for all Nigerians. It is this guarantee that allows all Nigerians to practice their religion or religion without hindrance.

"President Buhari has also affirmed his commitment to freedom of religion and worship for all Nigerians and that no religion or religious denomination would ever be imposed on a Nigerian.

"It is dangerous, misleading and impious to do politics with religion."
