The Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, has been postponed until 23 February, with general elections scheduled for Saturday, 16 Februaryth, 2019.

Professor Mahmood Yakubu, President of INEC, held a press conference at the headquarters of the commission. He announced that it was no longer possible to continue the election announced today, February 16, 2019.
According to him, "following a careful review of the implementation of its logistical and operational plan and its determination to organize free, fair and credible elections, the commission came to the conclusion that". it was no longer possible to hold the elections as planned. "
He announced that the presidential and National Assembly elections had been postponed until 23 February 2019.
He also said that the elections for governors and state bademblies were also postponed from one week to 9 March 2019.
According to him, "therefore, the Commission has decided to postpone the presidential and legislative elections to Saturday, February 23, 2019. In addition, the elections to the Boards of Governors, Assemblies of States and Territories of the Federal Capital (FCT) are postponed to Saturday, February 9th. March 2019. This will give the Commission an opportunity to address the identified challenges in order to maintain the quality of our elections.
"It was a difficult decision for the Commission, but it was necessary for the proper conduct of elections and the consolidation of our democracy.
"The Commission will meet key stakeholders to keep them informed of developments on Saturday, February 16, 2019 at 2 pm at the Abuja International Conference Center," he added.

Earlier, Rotimi Oyekanmi, the Press Secretary of the INEC President, Professor Mahmood Yakubu, informed the journalists that the commission had taken a decision after the crucial meeting attended by the president and 12 National Commissioners.
