Experts say the technology provides much more accurate readings than other models because it works at the level of "nanoparticles". It also uses artificial intelligence to identify specific chemicals, or "biomarkers," produced by various diseases. Earlier devices were only able to detect biomarkers when they were present in large quantities.
It will first be tested on lung cancer, but experts say it will be able to detect a range of cancers as well as other diseases, including tuberculosis and dementia.
The first trials are due this fall in two NHS hospitals and two in the United States.
If the first human trials prove the success of ANCON Medical scientists, the origin of the technology, the kits could be marketed within two years.
Dr. Glyn Hiatt-Gipson, who has contributed to the development of technology, said: "This technology is more sensitive than the nose of a dog and is powered by AI, so it is constantly evolving.
"My vision is that a decade from now, patients will be able to breathe into this mouthpiece and that doctors will be able to diagnose up to 400 different diseases in one breath."
