We want to do everything in our power to ensure that no agreement is reached, as this will only increase insecurity. We are happy that a majority in the British Parliament has the same feeling. We must now find what to do. We say that the treaty of exit took a long time to negotiate, so we do not wish to reopen it. This is not the order of the day.
But we are still discussing the future mechanism. And in future relationships, you will also be able to address issues that are still under discussion, for example with the management of the border between Northern Ireland, which belongs to the United Kingdom, and the Republic of Ireland and, by extension, with the European Union.
It is certainly possible to solve this problem – that is to say, to guarantee the integrity of the single market, the unity of the single market, even if Northern Ireland is not part of it, and other share the desire to have possible no control at the Irish border. You need to be creative and listen to each other – such discussions can and should take place. We can now use the time we have to reach agreement where prior agreement was not possible, if there was enough goodwill. But we have to hear the United Kingdom – that's the decisive point – how he sees that.
