Theresa May will make a direct appeal to European leaders to ask them to postpone the Brexit for three months, a few hours after announcing to the British people that a delay was "a source of personal regret".

At an EU summit in Brussels, she will try to persuade the other 27 countries to delay the exit of the UK beyond March 29th.

On Wednesday, the prime minister delivered a speech accusing MPs of being delayed and telling the nation that she was "on their side".

Jeremy Corbyn has to go to Brussels for separate talks on Brexit.

EU leaders are expected to arrive at the two-day summit from 13:00 GMT.

BBC correspondent in Europe, Kevin Connolly, said the EU seemed "to have all the badets" at the summit, some countries, including France, "skeptical about the value of making an offer" 39, an extension.
