Bridgerton’s Nicola Coughlan hits back at hit show’s ‘diversity’ critics

It is one of Netflix’s biggest hits today.

And Bridgerton’s Nicola Coughlan has strong feelings for those who have criticized the series for its diverse cast.

In a series of tweets published on Tuesday, the 33-year-old actress touted the success of the Racy Period drama as proof of the audience’s fervent acceptance of the series and its cast.

“You know the way some people were like ‘Diversity in period drama doesn’t work …” Nicola tweeted.

“63 million households thought it was,” she continued, adding a skull emoji.

Minutes later, the Ireland-born Galway Specialist added: ‘Remember people were trying to vote against the show on IMDB because it was so diverse?

“ You can’t reject us being Netflix[‘s] fifth largest original release ever.

Minutes later, the Galway, Ireland-born thesp added: ‘Remember people were trying to vote against the show on IMDB because it was so diverse? You can’t oppose us to Netflix[‘s] fifth largest original release ever ‘

In his first tweet, Nicola cited a tweet from Netflix himself announcing the all-time high ratings Bridgerton is expected to achieve in his first month on the platform.

On the show, Coughlan portrayed Penelope Featherington, the quick-witted youngest daughter of Lord and Lady Featherington, and sister of Prudence and Philipa.

Bridgerton takes place during the time of the Regency in London, England, in 1813, when people of all races were eligible for higher status in society.

Nonetheless, some viewers criticized the show’s casting of various actors of color, including breakout star Regé-Jean Page.

Nicola’s comments come as it was recently reported how she discovered a major twist involving her character that comes at the end of Bridgerton’s first season.

On Thursday, Coughlan explained to Variety that she discovered Penelope’s true identity as Lady Whistledown while reading a fan feed online while preparing for the role.

Bridgerton is produced by television prodigy Shonda Rhimes and created by Chris Van Dusen who has worked for her on Grey’s Anatomy, Private Practice and Scandal.

If the show does indeed reach 63 million views, it will overtake The Queen’s Gambit as Netflix’s most-watched original scripted series.

The brilliant show reached an audience of some 62 million households last November, according to the streamer himself.
