Brighton hopes Neal Maupay could be tempted by a move to the South Coast, two years after he snubbed him for Brentford.

The Premier League team is one of many clubs trying to recruit the striker after being impressed by the total of his 25 goals in the championship for the Bees last season.

Aston Villa, headed by former Brentford boss Dean Smith, and Sheffield United also follow the Frenchman, which has a price of around £ 20m.

Brighton has a long-standing interest in Maupay and believes he won the race to sign it two years ago.

But the 22-year-old chose to leave Saint-Etienne for the bees.

Brentford boss Thomas Frank confirmed yesterday that the striker was ready for the opening of tomorrow's season with Birmingham City, as did fellow striker Ollie Watkins – who has been linked to Crystal Palace.
