The Minister of Transport, the Hon. Kwaku Ofori Asiamah tasked the board of directors of Metro Mass Transit Limited (MMTL) to provide expertise by introducing innovative measures that will help turn around the transport company.
According to the Minister, the challenges facing the transport company are enormous and will require sound advice and decisions from the board of directors, teamwork and experience to meet them.
Inaugurating a nine-member board of MMTL in Accra on Tuesday, September 14, 2021, on behalf of Mr. Asiamah, Deputy Transport Minister Frederick Obeng Adom tasked the board with meeting the challenge and ensuring that that the operations of the transport company are boosted.
“Over the years, the company has faced several challenges, including drastic reduction in the operational fleet, frequent breakdowns and increased operating costs. We hope that the new board of directors will rise to this challenge to ensure that the company is relaunched to the level of reclaiming its market share and expanding its services, ”he noted.
The minister also urged the board to work in unison with company management to deal with the growing number of unrest among MMTL’s workforce and ensure that industrial harmony prevails, stressing that “these unrest, if not resolved, could potentially derail ongoing efforts.”

Mr Asiamah added that the ministry between 2018 and 2019 supported MMTL with a total of 100 new intercity buses to revamp operations.
Despite this, the ministry is looking to make other arrangements to bring in more buses in order to increase operations.
However, there would be a need to improve infrastructure such as terminals and maintenance workshops, urging the Board to assist Management in fulfilling its mandate.
The ministry, for its part, he added, will provide the support and guidance necessary to enable the council to fulfill its mandate, but has warned of the unfortunate practices of the council’s temptation. assume the management role in all cases.
“I will ask the board of directors and management to work as a team to achieve the goals of the company. As a precaution, I also want to remind Council that under the governance framework, they are under the oversight of the ministry and, for that matter, must report directly to the ministry no matter how big the problems are and we will. our best to solve it. I operate an open door policy, and members are free to knock on my door as and when you need my attention to discuss issues of importance to the development and improvement of MMTL’s operations ” , he noted.
Chairman of the Board, Hon. Kofi Ahenkorah Marfo, speaking on the task left to the shoulders of the board of directors, said they were ready to work with the management of the company to achieve their goals.
He expressed his gratitude to the president, Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, for re-trusting them by appointing them to serve on the board of directors of MMTL.
“As a board of directors, we are aware of the enormous challenge facing us as a result of the issues that we will face to resolve and overcome. However, we are committed to being ready to face these challenges with firmness and to address them appropriately, ”he noted.
He urged Council members to work hard as a team as they strive to make Metro Mass Transit Limited the preferred transport company in the sub-region.

Referring to the challenges of the business, the Hon. Marfo said the board and management will explore all avenues available to them to obtain spare parts to refurbish any broken down buses and will also ensure that those that have been declared unfit for use are discarded.
The welfare issues of MMTL workers, he added, will be duly addressed.
