BC Cancer Foundation Raises Record $ 63.7 Million
More than 77,000 people in BC will receive cancer care this year alone
More than 100,000 people helped make the BC Cancer Foundation a record year, raising $ 63.7 million for research and treatment.
This historic total closed a year with many highlights, including British Columbia's launch of the world's first prostate cancer clinical trial, which uses liquid biopsy technology to detect genetic markers. and match patients to treatment.
Other initiatives include the $ 10 million PET / CT scanner in Victoria and Kelowna, as well as the discovery of a gene that led to a new drug targeting 22 types of cancer.
Donor Patty Pitts of Victoria wanted to honor her two friends, Carol Lalonde and Marlene Palmer, who died of cancer.
"I wanted to use that money to make a real difference," said Pitts. "I know it's too late for Carol and Marlene, but it can have an impact on someone else in the future."
Her contribution of $ 250,000 has created a fund to support immunotherapy research in Victoria.
