Days before Britney Spears ‘court-appointed lawyer resigned on Tuesday, Spears’ mother argued the pop star should be allowed to choose her own lawyer, as Spears pushes to end a guardianship of 13 years which she described last month as “abusive”.
Highlights
Lynne Spears has asked the LA County Superior Court to allow her daughter to choose her own lawyer in a case filed Tuesday and dated last Thursday, five days before Britney Spears’ attorney Samuel Ingham resigned.
Ingham was appointed to represent Britney Spears in early 2008 after a California judge ruled she was unable to retain her own lawyer.
Now the singer’s mother argues that her daughter should be able to choose a personal lawyer because she has shown that she can take care of herself, noting that she has performed hundreds of times while it was under a “single” supervision imposed by the court.
Lynne Spears also sounded the alarm after her daughter told a judge last month that she was unsure she could file a petition in court to end her guardianship: “It’s clear that Conservatee has need a private lawyer to advise her on her fundamental rights, “says the file.
Crucial quote
“The curator is able to take care of herself and has in fact, within the parameters of that tutelage, made literally hundreds of millions of dollars as an international celebrity,” Lynne Spears said in her court record.
Key context
Britney Spears was placed in guardianship in 2008 due to mental health issues. The unusual legal arrangement gives the singer’s father and several other people the power to make decisions about her finances, career and daily life. After years of relative silence, she spoke publicly against the arrangement in a court appearance last month, alleging that her conservatives forced her to work, controlled her movements, made her take drugs against her will and prevented her from removing an IUD. She also claimed that her father, Jamie Spears, “liked the control to hurt his own daughter”. Jamie Spears says he acted in his daughter’s best interests and has argued that she can ask the court to end her guardianship.
