When Freeza was brought back into the Super Dragon Ball In order to join the Universe 7 team at the Power Tournament, he explained how he had undergone mental training to survive his pbading through hell that allowed him to better control the Golden Freeza form.
This may have been presented during the power tournament, but the greatest performance for his increased stamina was in Dragon Ball Super: Broly as he "fought" against Broly in this form for at least an hour.
The Super Saiyan Blue team of Vegeta does not work against Super Saiyan Broly, so Goku distracts Broly with Freeza so that they can leave in order to practice the fusion technique. This is played to laugh, and Freeza's strike is just a dessert for his actions in the movie, but it also reveals how powerful Freeza is.
Freeza turns into its Golden Freeza shape shortly after Broly's initial attack. When Goku and Vegeta perfect the Fusion Dance, they fail twice and have to wait 30 minutes for each unsuccessful attempt. During all this time, Broly is reproached to Freeza. But the important thing here is that, even if Freeza is being beaten, the Golden Freeza form lasts throughout the last final act of the film.
So, canonically, Freeza retains its golden form for both unsuccessful attempts until the conclusion of the last fight of Broly and Gogeta. He is not removed from the form and releases him himself when the fight is over. It's far from the first use of this power, and it's not as if he was playing in the Power Tournament where he used it sporadically during his 48 minutes.
At the beginning of the film, Whis asks why Goku and Vegeta continue their training with such ferocity, and Vegeta says that's because they have to be ready for Freeza. It's a sneaky way to suggest that Freeza is actually becoming stronger and could be a bigger threat later.
Even more, when you consider that the old rules of the Fusion Dance require one hour between each attempt to merge. If this is still part of the canon, the Golden Freeza held his for three hours in a row. It's scary.
Dragon Ball Super: Broly is now open in cinemas around the world and already has a longer life than raw Dragonball: Evolution. Funimation brought the film to the United States on January 16th and tickets for the film are now on sale. You can read the review of the comic book free spoiler movie here.
