But Haot thinks that Launcher's engine is significantly bigger than Orbex's. Haot and Waizenegger both emphasized the known capabilities of the 3D printing company SLM Solutions, originally from the Orbex engine. According to Haot and Waizenegger, the SLM Solutions printer is only capable of printing an engine half the size of the E-2.
"I do not know of any other machine that can do it," Waizenegger said of his company's M4K printer.
While E-2 was printed according to Launcher's specifications, Waizenegger made it clear that his business was building printers and not rockets. The E-2 was the third demonstration part printed by M4K. The M4K printer and the E-2 engine were developed independently, but the former needed to print parts to demonstrate its capabilities to potential customers. That's where Launcher came in.
"This is not a rocket-specific machine," Waizenegger said. "This machine [M4K] was developed independently of Launcher. "
