The 2022 edition of the Star Calendar, themed “On the Road”, will see the Canadian rock star reinvent moments behind the scenes with a cast of famous musicians.
Although the final images won’t be revealed until November, new behind-the-scenes photographs show Rita Ora kicking her in a bathtub and Cher slipping lipstick on a lighted mirror in the dressing room.

Adams, who has worked as a professional photographer for more than a decade, joins a call for prominent names including Annie Leibovitz and Peter Lindbergh, invited to photograph the annual calendar. Fresh out of a photoshoot with rapper Saweetie, he said being a musician himself puts him on an “equal footing” with the celebrities pictured.
“There is an almost instantaneous understanding when we meet, even though we have never met before – the fact that you are a musician and that I am a musician,” he told CNN, adding that he portrayed people “in the best light possible.”

Drawing on his own experience of four decades of touring, Adams will detail the journey from an initial spark of inspiration to the final show. Although he had overall creative direction on the sets, he said he relied on the talent and energy of the star actors.
“You know, I can’t do everything as a photographer,” he explained. “I can only define the script, and then it’s about making it work. And I’ll say the more people give, the better the photographs.”
Although he is best known for hits like “Summer of ’69” and “(Everything I Do) I Do It for You”, Adams has exhibited his photographs at institutions such as the Saatchi Gallery and in magazines such as British Vogue and Harper’s. Bazaar. He has published several books of his images, including portraits of veterans of the war in Afghanistan and homeless street vendors.

“Very sexy, without being overtly sexy”
Adams announced he was turning the schedule in June, when he posted a voice note on social media saying he was “proud” to be involved in the project. With last year’s schedule being canceled due to the pandemic, the 2022 edition was shot in Los Angeles and the Italian island of Capri in just three days in June and July.
The Palace Theater in Los Angeles and celebrity hangout Chateau Marmont were among the sets of stars such as Grimes and Normani, while Saweetie took to the expansive terrace of Hotel La Scalinatella in Italy for a sunny shoot. .
Adams, however, took the schedule in another new direction – including several men.

One of the most striking images shows Iggy Pop completely covered in silver paint as he re-enacts a post-show celebration. Adams said the 74-year-old was “totally into the idea” and received a standing ovation from the crew, setting the tone for the entire shoot. Asian-American rapper Bohan Phoenix, meanwhile, is seen brooding as he stands shirtless in the spotlight.
Although Adams is not the first photographer to include men in the Pirelli calendar (the late Karl Lagerfeld, for example, chose model Baptiste Giaocomini to portray an almost naked Apollo in his 2011 Greece-themed calendar) , the rock star said he would “be sure not to include some men in the equal opportunity.”

“Let’s face it, we men need to be objectified as much as women (are),” he said, while stating that he was not “following that old-fashioned way” to sexualize women through photography.
