Nigerian President Muhammadu Buhari arrived for a one-day working visit to Maiduguri, capital of Borno State and the birthplace of the Boko Haram Islamist insurgency.
He spoke to troops deployed on the front line to fight militants who are still terrorizing large areas of the north-east.
His trip comes a few days after the attack of a military base in Metele, which resulted in the death of at least 40 soldiers.
Buhari also visited wounded soldiers who were treated at a military center in Maiduguri.
His government and the army have been much criticized since the attack.
The army took five days to confirm the information on the attack and challenge the death toll.
Buhari, due to be re-elected in February, came to power in 2015 promising to defeat the militants, which he said was done.
On Saturday, he announced that he would remove the "loopholes" that had allowed activists to attack the base on Sunday 18 November.
