The Burger King franchisee in New Zealand was forced to remove a social media ad describing Westerners using oversized chopsticks to eat a new Vietnamese hamburger offered by the fast food chain.

The controversial advertisement sparked an online debate over whether the scene should be considered racist, after a New Zealander of Korean origin mentioned it in a Twitter message promptly collected more than 2.9 million views.

The Burger King advertisement was later removed.

Some social media users have compared the Burger King controversy to the one that emerged in 2018 when an advertisement from Dolce & Gabbana described an Asian model trying to eat pizza and other Italian dishes with chopsticks. The founders of the brand then made a public apology.
