OUAGADOUGOU, Burkina Faso – The president of Burkina Faso has appointed a new prime minister after a mbad resignation last week.

President Roch Marc Christian Kabore on Saturday named Christophe Joseph Marie Dabire as West Africa's prime minister in a decree read by Burkina Faso's national television.

Dabire was Minister of Health under the government of former President Blaise Compaore and then represented Burkina Faso in the West African Economic and Monetary Union. A new government will also be named.

Dabire replaces Paul Kaba Tieba, who resigned Friday with his government.

The resignations have not been motivated, but the government faces a growing extremist threat with an upsurge in attacks.

The body of a Canadian national kidnapped by jihadists was found last week. Another Canadian and an Italian have disappeared since mid-December.
