Cabinet Approves Proposals for User Fees for Academics | Education

Mathew Opoku Prempeh, Minister of Education, announced that the firm had approved proposals for revising student tuition fees.

He said it was done last month and was pbaded to Parliament for ratification.

Dr. Prempeh stated this in a speech read on his behalf at the 11th congregation of the University of Mines and Technology (UMaT) of Tarkwa.

"I am aware of the university community's concerns about user fees for academics, which have not been increased in the last three years, and I want to say that this is mainly due to the new procedure of the university. Approval of these fees by Parliament "he explained.

Regarding the clearance of some universities for staff replacement, he stated that the Ministry of Finance was working on his backlog urgently and that this problem would be fully resolved before the end of August 2019 .

The government recognizes and understands the need to retain some staff over the age of 65, particularly for the depth of their experience and their ability to continue to enrich the faculty, "said Dr. Prempeh.

He said that keeping these staff on the government's payroll had constitutional implications and that these people should instead be funded by an internally generated fund.

"The government accepts the position that there should have been a constitutional amendment to increase the age of retirement in order to integrate these teachers into the constitutional framework, and the Parliament is considering it", did he declare.

The minister pointed out that the government was aware that one of the consequences of its policy of free high school was the increase in the number of students wishing to be admitted to the university, academic year 2020 / 201, when the first cohort of students in the program would complete his western studies. He said that as part of a $ 500 million upgrade to the GETFund securitization infrastructure, universities like UMaT would receive a favorable counterpart.
