Cadbury lovers looking for comfort in the current British political climate can rejoice – the company's Freddo hot chocolate is vegan.
The hot chocolate powder is designed to be mixed with milk; this means that it does not contain milk or whey powder, which is traditionally added to hot chocolate designed to be prepared with hot water.
It also means that Freddo hot chocolate can be mixed with your favorite herbal milk to create an indulgent vegan hot drink.
Freddo Controversy
Those who grew up in the UK will be aware of the heated debate that mention of Freddo's name can ignite.
The most common outrage is due to the dramatic rise in the price of Freddo bars since its launch in the 90s. At the time of the initial publication, the bars cost only 10 pence, a figure that more than doubled, reaching 30 p . 100 in 2017. Some have even observed that the inflation rate can be measured at how much a Freddo bar costs.
A spokesman for Mondelez – the company that owns Cadbury's – told the BBC: "It is well reported that food and beverage manufacturers have been experiencing rising input costs for some time, which, combined with recent exchange rate pressures, makes food products more expensive to manufacture.
However, it is not just chocolate bars that are controversial. The eagle-eyed consumers will have noticed that there could in fact be no difference between Freddo's hot chocolate and Cadbury's Drinking's drinking chocolate – with the exception of the price.
The vegan ingredients and the calories per serving are the same for both products. However, Freddo's pots were sold at 86p for 100mg, while Cadbury's pots were at 60p to 100g, according to an article in The Sun published in 2017
A spokesman for Mondelez told Metro at the time "Cadbury Freddo Drinking Chocolate is designed to be a family treat and we recommend a serving suggestion that ultimately offers a completely different taste and chocolate experience than Cadbury Drinking Chocolate, designed for adults."
According to the Instagram account Accidentally Vegan, Freddo hot chocolate is found in most supermarkets and stores in the UK.
