According to a new study from the University of Malaga (UMA) in Spain, twins born by birth by caesarean section could present a higher risk of cognitive problems.
The results are published in the scientific journal Frontiers in Psychology.
"Twins are very vulnerable because their birth often ends prematurely and they often present complications of pregnancy and childbirth," said Dr. Ernesto González Mesa, professor of gynecology at UMA.
"We have verified that caesarean section becomes a risk factor for development. This is why gynecologists strongly believe in the benefits of badl delivery and we advocate the use of this surgical procedure only in case of a problem, "he said.
The study involved 160 twins born at the Materno-Infantil Hospital of Malaga in 2005. Of the 7,120 births in this period, 270 were multiple births. On the sample of all twins, 55% were born by badl delivery and 45% by caesarean section. Twins born before 32 weeks of gestation were not included in the study.
At the age of 6, the researchers evaluated their intellectual, neuropsychological and psychopedagogical development. The results were then compared to information on obstetric and perinatal variables, such as type of delivery, possible complications, age of mother, and weight of newborn, among others.
"By comparing all the data, we found that children whose intellectual level and low cognitive development were born by cesarean section," said Dr. María José González Valenzuela, Professor of the Department of Psychology of Evolution and of education and principal investigator of the study. .
In the future, researchers will be able to tackle the specific challenges of twins in reading, writing and arithmetic. They can also look at children's intestinal flora differences after cesarean and badl deliveries and how these alterations may be related to neurological effects.
The rate of multiple pregnancies has recently increased, mainly due to the use of badisted reproductive technologies and the fact that more older women give birth.
In the United States, the match rate is 5 to 1,000 live births. In 2015, a total of 133,155 infants were born at two deliveries. The rate of caesarean births for twin births increased from 53% to 75% between 1995 and 2008. However, as research on the benefits of badl birth for mother and babies is increasing, many doctors are trying to Avoid caesarean section as much as possible.
Professor Dolores López Montiel, Department of Psychobiology and Behavioral Science Methodology, also participated in the study.
